At the Y we are committed to helping people of all ages and abilities reach their full potential by engaging them in healthy activities. With a mission focused on healthy spirit, mind and body for all, we bring families closer together, encourage healthy choices, and foster community through fitness, sports, fun and common interests. The Y is a leader in involving children in sports and activities that instill values and develop healthy active habits for their futures. Last year 1,732,501 Californians were active and engaged members of local YMCAs throughout the state.
In addition to health and fitness programs and facilities for Californians of all ages, many Y's in California also offer the signature Diabetes Prevention Program. We partner with public health departments, healthcare systems, insurers and employers to deliver this yearlong lifestyle change program. The program is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which showed that by eating healthier, increasing physical activity, and losing a small amount of weight, a person with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by 58%.
Because of our commitment to healthy living, the California State Alliance of YMCAs advocates for public policies that promote health awareness and expand access to programs to improve public health. Our Alliance has supported measures to place warning labels on sugar-sweetened beverages, cautioning on the health risks such as obesity and type II diabetes associated with excessive consumption of liquid sugar. Our Alliance also supports an increased public investment in type II diabetes awareness and expanded access to diabetes prevention measures for people at risk of developing diabetes.
