Listos California Statewide Grant Initiative

Over the past few years, natural disaster preparedness isn't just a recommendation but a necessity. That’s why the California State Alliance of YMCAs partnered with the California Office of Emergency Services as part of the Listos California Statewide Grant Initiative, a vital program designed to strengthen disaster readiness across the state.
From June 2023 through March 2025, this collaboration worked with six YMCA associations to equip Californians with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to face emergencies head-on. Overall, the initiative has impacted over 140,000 individuals by providing access to culturally relevant resources and hands-on trainings.
At the center of this effort lies a powerful community-centered strategy: using the YMCA’s trusted presence to connect with diverse populations in meaningful ways. From multilingual materials to grassroots events, the YMCAs are ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to disaster readiness.
A few themes arose throughout the duration of the grant period:
- Materials and support were provided in three languages to reach communities across ten counties.
- YMCAs hosted 150+ trainings and over 120 local events, offering hands-on guidance and vital information.
- By leveraging YMCA staff and facilities as familiar, community-rooted spaces, the program ensured effective information sharing and built deeper trust with participants
This program demonstrates the power of partnerships and the importance of meeting people where they are. Through opportunities like this, we build stronger, more connected communities.
